Giovanni Falcone, his wife and three members of his security detail were killed by a massive bomb explosion on the motorway near the Sicilian town of Capaci near Palermo. Friend and colleague Paolo Borsellino and five police were killed 57 days later by a mafia bomb planted near his mothers home in Palermo.
“We must never get tired for looking for the truth behind the killing of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino,” Monti said during the address in a bunker used for the huge 2 year trial of almost 500 mafia suspects in the 1986-1987.
Former head of the Sicilian mafia Salvatore Riina who ordered the attacks was arrested less than a year later and is serving a life sentence. Other mobsters involved in the assassinations have been caught. But suspicion of help from politicians and members of the Italian secret service remain.
“There’s no reason for the state to justify the delay in getting the facts and finding those responsible,” Monti said.
